How is Music Chosen for the Mass

Based on the liturgical season: Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Marian, and Ordinary Time.

Each liturgical season dictates a certain type of music and liturgical theme

  • Advent expresses the excitement that we feel as we await the coming of our God.
  • Christmas, of course, expresses the joy of the birth of Christ.
  • The Lenten journey is a time of reflection, penance, turning back to God and prayerfulness.
  • Holy Week is another Liturgical journey when we travel from palm Sunday when Jesus enters Jerusalem through Holy Thursday (Christ shares a meal with the disciples and asks that they remember him, The crucifixion of Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday when we express joy that Jesus Christ has risen.
  • Marian days are devoted to our Blessed Mother.
  • Ordinary time is the largest segment of our liturgical year (33 weeks) and the readings dictate the type of music we use. Christ the King (Honoring our Lord, Jesus Christ as King of the Universe).
